Providing good quality, affordable, family homes in Winchester

Winchester Working Men’s Housing Society (WWMHS) was founded in 1911 and has been providing homes in Fulflood, Winchester since 1912.  We still own the same family houses today, as well as a small number of flats for older people.  The Society has charitable aims, and is a registered society under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014.  It’s activities are regulated by the Regulator of Social Housing; we are a private registered provider (PRP).  The Committee of Management is a group of voluntary people who give their time and expertise to oversee the Society’s work, which is carried out day to day by a small team of experienced staff and specialist contractors.

Hedge Trimming | 2nd November 2023

On Monday 8 November, hedge maintenance work will start across the Society’s estate. This will be a hard cut, undertaken every few years to preserve boundaries.  It will involve cutting back the top foliage of hedges and underlying stems and branches. This will widen paths both to the front and rear of houses.

  •  Cutting will be to the outside and tops of hedges, not inside gardens.
  • Removal of the outer green foliage can temporarily spoil the appearance of the hedges.  This will grow back next spring.
  • The work may involve the use of small chain saws, so there may be increased noise levels.
  • Some paths may be temporarily out of use whilst the work proceeds.
  • Debris and arisings will be cleared away by the contractor.
  • Please look out for warning signs and keep clear of working areas.

Gas Safety Checks | 13th May 2021

Please be aware that the Society has decided to bring forward annual boiler service and gas safety checks on a number of homes on the estate from the autumn / winter months to the summer.  The purpose of this is to free up time with our gas and heating contractor during the winter to attend call-outs rather than taking up valuable time undertaking servicing. You will be advsied if your home is affected.

The outcome should be better response times to breakdown and repairs during the winter months for our tenants.

If you haven’t already been contacted by them, Gascare will call you to arrange a suitable time.

Grounds Maintenance - Introducing Idverde | 7th May 2021

We have recently started to use Idverde as our preferred provider of grounds maintenance outside properties and in communal areas around the estate.  Their services include hedge trimming (outer sides and top), shrub cutting and weed control.

Telling Us Your Covid Status | 5th May 2021

Please continue to tell us your Covid-19 status if you are arranging or expecting a maintenance visit.  If somebody in your household is ill with Covid-19, has had a positive test, or is isolating, we need to know.  This is so the visit can be planned safely, or postponed if that is more appropriate.

Tree Planting In Milverton Road | 5th May 2021

We are delighted that the Highways Authority, Hampshire County Council, plans to plant suitable trees on the grass verges by Society homes in Milverton Road later in 2021.  These will include flowering cherries, hawthorn, gingkos and maples.  You can help by giving the trees a weekly bucket of water in dry weather.

Contacting Society Staff | 16th April 2021

Society staff work remotely most of the time and occasionally use the small office behind Ronald Bowker Court.  Please contact us if you need to, using mobile phone numbers and email (Sally, Pete and Fiona) to help us reply to you more quickly. We can help you with repair and maintenance advice, or with anything to do with your tenancy that you may be worried about.

Managing our properties
for over 100 years

The Society has provided homes for local people during two world wars in 1914/18 and 1939/45, seen in the Millennium in Year 2000, and our latest challenge is Covid-19 from 2020.  Originally our houses had no indoor bathrooms or central heating, which were added many years ago as major modernisation projects.  Windows, doors, roofing, kitchens, and electrical installations have all been maintained and replaced several times in the history of each house, and the allotment areas on the estate were redeveloped to provide new flats and pathways.  Our next decades will see us address the need to reach the UK’s zero carbon targets, and national initiatives such as the adoption of electric cars.
